Optimizing Production with a Pallet Rack Flow Storage System

Steel King Gypsum

Torrance, CA (PRWEB) April 15, 2008

To expand business and its capacity to serve customers, United States Gypsum Company, North America's largest manufacturer of gypsum-based products, added a new production line to its Baltimore facility, which created both opportunity and challenge. Besides requiring maximum pallet rack use in a minimum footprint at the facility, the company aimed to optimize production and inventory management. The company chose a warehouse pallet flow storage system.

In a flow storage system, dynamic flow rails are inclined in a static rack structure, allowing loads placed on one end to move by gravity on rollers to the unloading end, with speed controllers acting as gentle brakes. As a load is removed, the loads behind it move forward automatically.

'We had plenty of overhead warehouse clearance but not enough pallet rack storage,' says Adam Simpson, Joint Treatment Department Manager at U.S. Gypsum Company's Baltimore plant. 'We wanted to minimize labor and forklift handling while adding first-in, first-out (FIFO) capability to rotate stock and maximize shelf-life for customers.'

The dynamic storage racks also had to be heavy-duty, able to withstand high forklift traffic and carry a load of about 1,200 pallets. The company turned to Delmarva Material Handling, a material handling systems integrator, and Steel King, a flow storage system and pallet rack manufacturer.

Delmarva Material Handling recommended and U.S. Gypsum Company selected the SK3400 pallet flow system, which provided storage efficiency, inventory management and durability benefits. Because the dynamic flow system depth, height, and width were well matched to the size of the facility and capabilities of the material handling equipment, it was a good fit for the company's high volume, space efficient needs.

Once loaded, FIFO product rotation is automatic and the rack eliminates labor and fork truck operation to arrange loads. Forklifts are required only for the initial and final unloading. Compared to traditional selective pallet rack use, which requires multiple aisles, aisle space can be reduced by 75 percent and up to 100 percent more product can be stored.

'We're optimizing production, storage, and inventory management,' says Simpson. 'Pallets are stored four high and 15 deep. 'By increasing storage capacity in our existing facility, we've eliminated the need for new construction. We've reduced physical plant overhead and material handling costs; and as product automatically rotates through storage, shelf life is maximized for customers.'

To avoid construction and logistics bottlenecks, Delmarva Material Handling helped to integrate the dynamic flow storage system with warehouse space and material handling equipment. Steel Guard protective railings were added to protect equipment and personnel from fork lift damage.

Simpson notes that the flow storage racks are built to last. Compared to open-back, roll-formed columns, the pallet flow racks have 44 times the torsional strength and 250% greater fork truck impact strength, but with the security and safety of a bolted beam connection. Its continuously welded, all tubular construction allows greater durability with less maintenance, and full horizontal and diagonal bracing increases frame strength.

'The pallet rack flow storage system has worked flawlessly from day one and is virtually maintenance free,' concludes Simpson. 'It's been a great addition to our plant, and we're considering further additions as we continue to grow.'

New Council to Reinvent Trucking, for Carting just as much Freight on half the Energy

New Council to Reinvent Trucking, for Carting just as much Freight on half the Energy

Boulder, Colo (Vocus) October 28, 2009

Leaders of the Rocky Mountain Institute's MOVE team announced that they are joining with trucking industry leaders to inaugurate the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE), with the goal of helping to reinvent the trucking industry to carry just as much freight on half as much energy.

The new group will collect, assess, and circulate information on performance and efficiency benefits to technology developers, fleet owners, and truck drivers, said leaders of the transportation research and consulting team at the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), in Boulder, Colo.

Interested media are invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the NACFE on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 at the University of Chicago's Gleacher Center. Additional information and registration is available at NACFE's website.

"There is a lack of trustworthy information evaluating different technologies for fleets to make investment decisions," said Hiroko Kawai, principal of RMI's MOVE team. "The freight industry, and the trucking industry in particular, have been burned by a snake-oil salesman approach to technology, and it is difficult for end-users of innovative technologies to accelerate market adoption. The same challenges are also shared by producers of technologies; they cannot accelerate the market adoption of their R&D efforts, and it is hard for them to lead the market even when they offer the necessary innovations."

The formation of NACFE is based upon direct industry requests received during RMI's Transformational Trucking Charrette (see documents, video, and recorded press call here), at which a diverse group of trucking industry stakeholders met in Denver in April 2009 to discuss barriers to, and opportunities presented by, a doubling of trucking efficiency. The RMI MOVE team's name stands for "MObility and Vehicle Efficiency."

Additional information and registration is available at the NACFE's website, http://www.freightefficiency.org.

Dallas Contracting Co., Inc. Completes Interior Demolition and Used Equipment Salvage Project

South Plainfield, NJ (PRWEB) April 8, 2005

Dallas Contracting Co., Inc. (Dallas Contracting) was contracted by a large general contractor to provide interior demolition services and equipment removal at a 100,000 square foot office and light manufacturing building located in central New Jersey. The scope of work included interior demolition of all interior sheetrock walls, partitions, flooring, drop ceilings and HVAC. It also included the removal of all mechanical and boiler room equipment.

Interior demolition (also known as strip-out or gut-out) of the 100,000 sf building was conducted utilizing a 10-man crew with several scissor lifts and skid steers. The crew systematically worked from the rear of the building towards the front demolishing the sheetrock walls, partitions, floor coverings, drop ceilings and HVAC. Workers on scissor lifts utilized demolition saws and torches to cut piping, ductwork and other conduit. Debris and garbage was removed utilizing skid steers. The skid steers were also utilized to help sort salvageable scrap metal and then load the scrap metal into containers for offsite recycling.

A mechanical room containing chillers, boilers, switchgear, compressors and air dryers also needed to be completely gutted. Dallas Contracting Co., Inc. utilized a combination of our interior demolition and rigging crews and our investment recovery and used equipment-purchasing experts to salvage equipment for resale. Equipment salvaged for resale included various pumps, air compressors and associated air dryers and filters, switchgear, dry type transformers and several motors. The remaining equipment was either too old or outdated to be of any value for resale. This non-salvageable equipment was cut up and sent offsite for scrap metal recycling.

DallasÂ's first goal was to itemize, salvage and rig out all the resalable used equipment. Packaging and filling line equipment including conveyors were dismantled, match marked and sent to several end user buyers. Stainless steel storage and process tanks were rigged out of the facility using forklifts and equipment rollers. There were over ten (10) stainless steel tanks of various sizes and capacities. Some of the tanks were immediately sold and some were sent to our storage yard to be inventoried for future sales. There were also compressors, transformers, mixers, pumps, valves, and scales that were placed on pallets and either sold immediately or brought back to the yard for inventory and future sale. Dallas Contracting Co., Inc. maximized the value of the scrap metal by sorting ferrous and non-ferrous metals and through our strong relationships in the scrap metal market.

The entire project was completed in a month and a half. There were no injuries or incidents as safety is the number one priority for Dallas Contracting.
