Largest Organic Farm in Alaska Hits the Auction Block
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (PRWEB) August 14, 2013
Harkening back to his childhood growing up in a Swedish farming family, Sven Ebbesson has had a deep love for agriculture all his life. Now retired as director of the University Of Alaska Medical Department, Sven has decided to let other owners share his love of the well-tilled soil.
Sven emigrated from Sweden to Winfield, Kan., when he was 15 years old. He met his wife, Barbara, a nurse, in Germany while stationed in the Army. Sven earned his doctorate in anatomy and has had a prestigious academic career in medical research. This career led his family to settle down in Alaska, where he began his own farm. Sven continued working on the farm even after his retirement from the university in 2000.
"Following the purchase of our first tract of land, Barbara and I – along with our three sons – began clearing land in order to grow potatoes," Ebbesson said. "The soil fertility in concert with the area's climate makes the land ideal for growing potatoes."
From the beginning, the Ebbessons decided the farm would be organic and have completed all of the inspections and paperwork to get the official designation. After spending many years cultivating this unique piece of land, Sven and Barbara have decided it's time to retire from the farm as well.
"There is a tremendous opportunity to expand the farming operation we started," Sven said. "We believe the new owners will be quite prosperous with what my family has built."
Dubbed 'a thousand acres of happiness' by Alaska Fairbanks News, the Ebbesson Farms consists of roughly 1,134 acres (458 ha) – 203 acres are cleared and currently used to grow organic potatoes. The cleared land is divided into 17 different fields ranging in size from 4 to 32 acres. Additionally, the property has been improved with a cabin, sauna and insulated barn.
"Not only is this land ideal for growing hay, potatoes, carrots and other vegetables, but it gives its owner access to some amazing wildlife," said Curt Marshall, auctioneer and Realtor with United Country – Theurer Auction/Realty, LLC. "This is truly a unique opportunity to own Alaskan wilderness with great hunting opportunities. Since Alaska does not place property tax on land designated "agricultural," the income potential of this property is enormous."
This auction will offer the property as five separate parcels or in any combination. The event will also feature an assortment of farming equipment including tractors, a forklift, potato planter, harvester, feeder/hopper and much more.
The live auction event will take place Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m., and will be held at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge located at 4477 Pikes Landing Road in Fairbanks, Alaska. Informational sessions will be held prior to the auction on Friday, Sept. 13 from 3 to 5 p.m., and Monday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge. This locale is close to downtown and Fairbanks International Airport. For room reservations call 907-455-5094.
