Expert Drivers and Warehouse Selectors Compete at U.S. Foodservice's National Safety Championship

San Antonio, TX (Vocus) August 21, 2010

Nearly 60 U.S. Foodservice drivers and warehouse selectors put their professional skills to the test August 20–22 with a series of knowledge, safety and driving challenges at the company's fourth annual National Safety Championship in San Antonio, Texas.

The competitors represent the best of U.S. Foodservice's 12,000 drivers and warehouse selectors from across the country. The competition tests knowledge, skill and safety. The tractor-trailer drivers, "pup" tractor-trailer drivers, forklift material handlers and pallet jack handlers first demonstrate industry and safety knowledge through a written exam before meeting to test their ability to safely navigate a specially designed obstacle course.

"Safety is a top priority for U.S. Foodservice, and that's why this event is so important to us," said Stuart Schuette, chief operating officer, U.S. Foodservice. "It is a great way to recognize our skilled employees and celebrate their talents and dedication."

The competition takes place in San Antonio's Freeman Coliseum. This year, participants compete using biodiesel trucks and fuel cell-powered forklifts, which are now used by many U.S. Foodservice locations to reduce carbon emissions. Winners of the 2010 U.S. Foodservice National Driving Competition will be honored during a banquet at the historic Empire Theater where they will receive plaques and cash prizes. The top drivers in each category are also eligible to attend the 2010 IFDA (International Foodservice Distributors Association) Food Industry Truck Driving Championship at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando from September 10-12.

"This competition not only recognizes the great efforts of drivers and warehouse selectors at U.S. Foodservice employees, but also encourages all of us to be the best in the industry," said 2009 Pallet Jack Category Winner, Victor Orozco. "It makes me proud knowing that I'm one of the best at what I do."

U.S. Foodservice is one of the nation's largest food distributors, serving more than 250,000 independent restaurants, schools, healthcare facilities and military installations across the United States.
