Top 3 Most Affordable U.S. Cities for Single Men and Women to Buy or Rent a Home

Top 3 Most Affordable U.S. Cities for Single Men and Women to Buy or Rent a Home

Miami, Florida (PRWEB) February 27, 2013

A recent report highlighting cities with higher ratios of one gender over the other may be useful for singles traveling around the country or those looking to relocate. The Huffington Post reviewed the top 100 U.S. metropolitan areas and discovered a select few cities where there are higher ratios of women living alone as well as cities where ratios of men living alone are higher than women. The report excludes people over 65 years old, and subtracts an estimated number of gay and lesbian people living alone to focus on segments of the population who are interested in dating someone of the opposite sex. Houses.com took that analysis one step further to find out which of those cities may be affordable cities for singles to buy or rent a home.

Affordable Cities for Single Women:

While the list of cities with the most single women living alone stretches from New England to the District of Columbia beltway, the more affordable cities for singles are further south. The top 3 most affordable cities for single women are: Raleigh, N.C., Richmond, VA, and Atlanta, GA, where women outnumber men by 1.07, 1.06 and 1.06, respectively.

Raleigh Metro: Houses for sale in Raleigh in 2012 sold for an average of $ 86 per square foot. Houses.com data shows most 2012 sales were in the town of Clayton, with an average sales price of $ 176,356.

Richmond Metro: In 2012, houses in the state's capital city sold for an average of $ 108 per square foot. The average sales price was $ 214,266.

Atlanta Metro: A house in the city with the world's busiest passenger airport could be bought for $ 163,897 on average last year. Average square foot price was a low $ 78.

Affordable Cities for Single Men:

For those interested in finding a single man who can also afford a home, Houses.com has done the work for you. The top 3 most affordable areas for single men in the U.S. are:

Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville: At $ 72 a square foot, homebuyers can expect a lot of real estate for their money. Houses.com market data shows the average sales price was $ 142,260 in 2012, with more than 5,500 single-family home transactions. More than a third of that activity occurred in Palm Bay, where homes sold at average price of $ 81,240. Even better, the men to women ratio is 1.26 as reported by the Huffington Post.

Gary Metro: The largest city in Lake County and just south of Chicago had more than 5,900 sales in 2012. The average home price was $ 86,422, with an average of $ 57 per square foot. This mid America city came in at # 4 on Huffington's list with a 1.23 ratio of men to women.

Salt Lake City Metro: The capital city of Utah and also the state's most populous city had more than 8,600 home sales in 2012, the most of any Utah metro. The average sales price was $ 175,951, and the average price per square foot was $ 102. Within this metro area, homes in West Valley City sold on average for $ 128,398. Similar to the other 2 top most affordable cities for single men, the ratio of men to women is 1.21.

While these cities are not exactly national hotspots like New York, Boston and Las Vegas where there are also high ratios of one gender over the other living alone, there is much to be said about each one. Each of these affordable cities for singles offers unique destinations and attractions, and homes for sale available for almost every budget.
