The story begins a month before, when SizeItUp contacted a local wheels retailer asking them if they wanted a fitment guide provider for an online store. The company had an in house developer who blew off the proposition saying, "No one really needs a fitment guide to sell wheels online."
In an exchange of emails, a friendly but intense debate brewed between fitment data provider, SizeItUp and Mike Clooney, (not his real name) the company web developer.
"I know that getting an API, and having it integrated into your website sounds like a great, one-time fee option," says founder of Sizeitup, Brian Inge. "But believe me it is not a realistic option. Doing a fitment calculation via API will take forever, and displaying the results will take a good 15 seconds on the website. Furthermore implementing the right API call and putting the data together is a whole different challenge."
Brian's theory was put to the test on a demo wheel and tire website with an integrated API, and the search function was indeed very slow. The user satisfaction from such a website would be low, and updating the store database would be a huge hassle for the company.
Going with Brian's method means that companies would have access to a wheel and tire eCommerce solution, inclusive of an ACES compliant fitment database that is continuously updated by sizeitup.
As for Mike, it took a couple of emails, but he was finally able to see Brian's point. It took around a month but Brian was determined to show Mike how industry standard wheel and tire stores are created.
