Capturing time is something that has fascinated photographers since the formal invention of photography in 1826. However, it was not until the pioneering work of Eadweard Muybridge and his magnum opus Animal Locomotion (1884–1887) that photographers, scientists, and inventors finally realized that stopping time with a camera was within reach. artnet Auctions is pleased to present Stopping Time: Capturing the Photographic Second, a sale featuring the work of innovators including Eadweard Muybridge, Berenice Abbott, and Gjon Mili, as well as Contemporary artists such as Adam Fuss, Matthew Pillsbury, and Sarah Pickering. Works in the sale will range in value from US$ 3,000 to 20,000.
This special sale presents both classic and contemporary approaches to the theme of "time." One highlight of the sale is Henri Cartier-Bresson's iconic image, Behind the Gare Saint-Lazare (1932), estimated at US$ 12,000 to 15,000. Cartier-Bresson was the master at capturing what he called "the decisive moment," and this particular image has often been cited as one that epitomizes his method of operation. Cartier-Bresson freezes the moment just before the man's heel hits the puddle, with the man's reflection mirrored in the still water below him.
The sale also features Hiroshi Sugimoto's Time Exposed (1991), a portfolio comprised of 51 tri-tone offset lithographs, estimated at US$ 15,000 to 18,000. Though taken from nearly identical vantage points, each photograph in the series captures a different body of water from around the world, evoking the infinite nature of the ocean in a rich palette of black, gray, and white tones. Central to Sugimoto's work is the idea of photography as a means of freezing time and preserving memory, a theme which he conveys through his meticulous attention to craftsmanship and the nuances of the photographic process.
Another highlight of the sale is Harold Eugene Edgerton's Cranberry Juice Dropping into Milk, estimated at US$ 3,500 to 4,000. Edgerton, an engineering professor, contributed to the invention of stroboscopic lighting for photography. With this technology, he was able to record split-second moments that the human eye would otherwise miss, such as the splash created as a drop of juice hits the surface of milk.
