Between 1970 and 2010, workplace fatalities declined by 65 percent while occupational injury and illness rates have dropped by 67 percent. Over the same period, the number of Americans in the workplace has almost doubled. The web-based forklift training giant, ForkliftCertification.com, revealed the following statistics on occupational health:
In 1970, 38 Americans lost their lives at work each day. This equates to almost 14,000 deaths in work-related injuries that year. In 2010, this number was to 13 workplace deaths each day, a total of 4,690.
In 2010, four out of every 100 workers had a workplace injury or illness. This is down from 11 out of 100 ill or injured workers in 1970.
What are the leading causes of workplace fatalities?
During the calendar year 2010, almost 20 percent of all workplace fatalities in private industry were in construction. The table below shows most common causes of workplace death in the construction industry. These 'fatal four' are responsible for almost 60 percent of all fatalities.
If these 'fatal four' causes of workplace deaths could be eliminated, the lives of almost 450 Americans could be saved each year.
