Portland, OR (PRWEB) September 14, 2011

Harding Steel Inc., a company that has been manufacturing, installing and servicing world class parking lift systems since 1968, recently completed the nation's single largest installation of non-mechanical parking storage racks at the New York Police Department's impound lot near JFK International Airport. Tully Construction served as the general contractor for the first-of-its kind project.

In 2010, Harding Steel was approached by the city to bid on this project, which involved producing a large scale system to provide 2,700 spaces for the storage of impounded, immobilized and/or evidence vehicles. The storage rack systems were designed to be two and three levels high, whereby each level is accessed by a commercial weight forklift truck with a special fork system designed for lifting vehicles.

"The solution we created is very similar in concept to dry-dock boat storage facilities," said Jim Myers, President and COO of Harding Steel Inc. "We worked closely with Tully Construction to value engineer the rack for easy installation, ground slope variability and the addition of a screen system to block the racks from view."

Harding Steel developed this static storage system specifically for this NYPD installation, and it's quite a departure for a company that is widely regarded as the leading provider of mechanical and semi-automated parking lift systems. Upon completion of engineering drawings, Harding Steel built a set of complete working prototypes at its facilities in Kearney, New Jersey for further inspection and testing from the NYPD and Tully Construction. The rack systems were engineered to stringent structural requirements set forth by the City of New York and certified by a New York state licensed professional engineer.

"We realized fairly quickly that any large city could benefit from a system like this and we decided to add it to our product line," explained Ryan Myers, National Project Manager for Harding Steel. "We visited our facilities and went over every nut, bolt, weld, configuration, and installation strategy to make sure the rack systems were streamlined for installation efficiency and simplicity. We are now ready to offer this product to cities across the nation."
